Past Events

November Meeting preceded by the AGM

We were lucky enough to have Ross Aitken tell us about The Twineworks at West Coker.  He gave us a fascinating account of all that has been achieved there and also a brief and very

entertaining glimpse of naval history

October Meeting.

Hugh Vincent organised another brain-teaser of a quiz to test our knowledge, and in some cases, lack of it, at our monthly meeting.  One of our committee members, James Roberts, came

out on top and impressed us all with his knowledge.

September Meeting

Jeremy Barker gave a fascinating, illustrated, talk on Sir James Thornhill of Thornhill Park near Stalbridge.

Sir James was clearly a very talented man and hopefully Jeremy will be able to organise a visit to Thornhill Park in 2020.

August Meeting
A pleasant event was had by one and all at the ‘Evening at the Museum’.

It was great to just look at some of the exhibits, have a chat and a glass of Pimms with friends.

In March we were very lucky to have both Denny Robbins & John Rickard from the Somerset Vernacular Building Research Group to talk to us about:

Church Houses and a Milborne Port Example (on which they have carried out a survey).

It was a fascinating evening and I think that we all learnt a lot about what to look for in old buildings especially in regard to Church Houses.

The Somerset Vernacular Building Research Group might be willing to undertake a village survey if we can demonstrate a good level of interest.

If you are interested about finding more about the history of your home, then please contact us on either This email address is being protected from spambots. We are also planning an exhibition in the Museum during the summer featuring a few of the interesting houses in Milborne Port.  If you think that your house could be included please let us know on any of the contacts listed above.

We hope to encourage local residents to want to find out more about their homes and we would like to be able to put together a booklet of some sort featuring the houses and their history.  If you feel that this is something you would like to be a part of please do make contact with us, we would love to hear from you.

Loyalty, Purity and Hope - May Meeting

This is one of the few 'in house' evenings we have done and Lesley Wray, Janet Mathews, Mary Clothier, Nathalie Hetherington and Lyn Harrison provided an entertaining evening with many interesting facts and photographs of local Suffragettes and Suffragists and how these fitted in with the national picture.

June Meeting - Richard Duckworth

As always Richard provided a fascinating and informative evening along with slides, film clips and a wonderful complimentary audio accompaniment.

Some wonderful footage of steam trains passing through Milborne Port and Sherborne stations.

This was a fund-raising event for us and we were able to raise over £240 to provide new and more professional signage for the Museum.

Thank you to all who were able to come and support us.

July Meeting - St. John's Church with John Fanning & Lesley Wray

John & Lesley are always able to give us new and interesting facts about the church both inside and outside.  Over 45 people joined that night and we were lucky enough to have a very pleasant summer's evening looking around the church.
