Anything Goes for Milborne Port Opera

mpoMilborne Port Opera takes to the sea in a spectacular “Anything Goes” The last time Milborne Port Opera put to sea was in their award-winning HMS Pinafore in 2011. This year’s offering is set on a transatlantic liner in the 1930s with a glittering cast, music by Cole Porter and a book and lyrics by, among others, P.G Wodehouse. Yes, it’s “Anything Goes”, a very funny musical with some great numbers, including the title song, plus “I get a kick out of you”, “You’re the top” and “Blow Gabriel Blow”.

HMS Pinafore it is not.

The cast are having enormous fun learning new skills – tap dancing, jazz syncopation and delivering comedy lines with a sharpshooter’s precision.

anything-goesThe show is full of wonderful characters – Reno, a glamourous evangelist turned nightclub singer, a missionary bishop, gangsters and their molls, the English Aristocracy, American Millionaires and some of the cleverest stowaways you will ever meet. The plot is largely irrelevant, but it involves unrequited love, the apprehension of dangerous criminals, a lot of disguises and marvellous singing.

Many MPO favourites are in the cast. Sukie Read steps up to play the title role of Reno alongside Lloyd Davies as stowaway Billy Crocker, and we welcome several talented newcomers from larger companies. Caroline D’Cruz continues as musical director.

This year the audience will get a big surprise when they walk into the Village Hall, which has been transformed into the deck of the SS America on its maiden voyage from New York to London.

The Box office will open on March 1st. You can book on line quickly and simply 24/7. MPO shows generally play to full houses, so early booking is advised.
