Milborne Port History & Heritage

Heritage LogoOur next meeting is on Monday 18th February at 7.30pm in Church House, Bathwell Lane. Alan Stone will be giving a talk dealing with Somerset Cider. He is an experienced speaker with a good sense of humor and his talks are always enjoyed.

The following talk should be of great interest to the village. It takes place on Monday 18th March at 7.30pm in Church House, Bathwell Lane.

Denny Robbins will be discussing the history of Church Houses. These were the mediaeval equivalent of church halls. Their chief purpose was to house festivals and church ales which raised funds for the parish church. They also provided a secular meeting place for mediaeval parishioners, as well as a religious one. A surviving example has been recently discovered in our village by The Somerset Vernacular Building Research Group. John Rickard who led the SVBRG survey team will talk about the survey and show photographs and also the research findings.

We would encourage anyone in the village who has an interesting historical house to come to the meeting as we hope this survey might be extended to other buildings in our village.

A full program of talks has been arranged for this year and we are in the process of organising visits for our members. Information leaflets will be available at our next meeting. We hope that existing members will renew their membership and we welcome anyone who would like to join this year. See also the heritage pages on this website.
