WI looking forward to 2019

WI logoChristine Porter writes; we had a really enjoyable last meeting of the 2018 in December when we had our usual delicious Fish & Chips supplied by Something Else Fishy, followed by mince pies and mints and washed down with wine! After we'd wined and dined our speaker, David Sutcliffe, gave us an illustrated talk on the history of Christmas carols and other seasonal traditions.  I think we were all surprised that several of our well-known traditional hymns were written by Americans.

The previous day some of us attended the carol service held in the beautiful cathedral at Wells where five of our members were in the choir. We then held our group carol service in our own beautiful church the following Monday.

As you know, our room is open every Friday morning for serving coffee/tea and cake to villagers and visitors. A special coffee morning was organised by Kate Davis at the beginning of December which was very well attended. I'm pleased to say that over £400 was raised and will be sent to the Emergency Disaster Fund for people affected by the recent tsunami in Indonesia so a big thank you to everyone who contributed either by giving donations for the raffle, baking cakes or coming along to have a coffee.

We have an exciting programme to look forward to in 2019, starting with our meeting on Thursday, January 10th at 7.30pm in the WI Room in the old Town Hall when our speaker will be talking about 'My Travels in Vietnam'. If you are new to the village, or a long term resident, and would like to come along then please do so. We are happy for you to come to two meetings, just paying a contribution for the coffee etc, before deciding to join permanently.   If you do decide to join us (and we hope you will) your annual subscription covers the year's meetings and subsidiary outings to other WIs, plus being part of a national organisation and having the monthly magazine delivered to your door.

If you would like any further information please contact me or Ann, our secretary, on 01963 250859.

Finally, make I take this opportunity of wishing you all a Very Happy Christmas and Best Wishes for 2019.
