Friends of Milborne Port Library (FOMPL) OCTOBER 2018

Black FOMPL logo002This month commemorates 400 years since our local hero, Sir Walter Raleigh, was found guilty of treason and executed. Maria Wingfield Digby has written a short history of the key events of Raleigh’s life, available at Winstones and Sherborne Castle shop.

Anyway, onto Library matters. On Saturday 22 September we held the annual Summer Reading Challenge party and awards ceremony. As in past years, Milborne Port Primary School kindly allowed us to use the hall and kitchen facilities. This year’s theme was Mischief Makers, to celebrate 80 years of the Beano comic.

reading challenge pictureThis summer sixty three children signed up for the challenge and we welcomed forty nine of them, plus their parents and siblings to the event. There was a range of mischievous activities on hand. The pipe cleaner spiders in their Dennis the Menace colours were popular as were the parachutes with their jolly little yellow ‘airmen’. Tony O’Brien’s paper bangers were a great success and Spinning Minnie and Gnasher went down a storm. Pompoms were fired from catapults and the air was filled with flying ‘Beano’ paper planes. Sue Spencer entertained the children with TS Elliot’s McAvity the Mystery Cat and told them the story of The Boy Who Cried Wolf. All those who had taken part received a medal and certificate. We’d like to say a big Thank You to everyone who helped make this summer’s Reading Challenge such a success, and especially to Sue and Edwina who awarded the medals and certificates.

On a more sober note, we all know about the enormous savings Somerset County Council has to make and our library remains under serious threat of closure. We are currently looking at all the available options to enable the library to continue to offer the village such a valuable resource. The latest news from Somerset County Council states that details of the recommendation for each library will be sent to communities on 16 October.

Finally, it’s good to hear that Storytime has now resumed – every Friday afternoon in the Children’s Corner of the Library from 2.30 – 3.00 pm. Just right for those who pick up from school at 3.15.
