The Royal British Legion - membership news

Royal British LegionAs we approach the centenary of the Armistice on Sunday 11th November we think of the millions of lives lost in the four years of the Great War, and in Milborne Port we have been remembering the centenary of each of the villagers who lost their lives by a tolling of the bells at St John's Church on the anniversary of their death. Many lives have been lost in subsequent conflicts, World War 2, the Falklands, Iraq and Afghanistan to mention just a few. But there have been many others injured either physically or mentally by conflicts and this is where the Royal British Legion (RBL) plays such a vital part in supporting them throughout their lives.

The Milborne Port and District Branch has about 80 members and usually has three events each year - a Cheese and Wine Party in the spring, a Garden Party in the summer and a Dinner in the winter. We are always looking to increase our membership and for an annual subscription of just £17 you can help those surviving men and women and their families. So at this time of Remembrance please consider joining the Milborne Port Branch of the RBL; you do not have to have served in the Armed Forces as has been a preconception in the past; indeed it is the responsibility of all of us to help those in need. If you would like to join please contact either our Recruiting Officer, Mr Ian Hawley on 01963-250840, Cdr Colin Hague on 01963-250108 or the Chairman on 01963-251359.

The Annual Poppy Appeal, which will be launched at the end of October, is the Legion's annual appeal to raise funds for those in need. In Milborne Port we have about 40 collectors including shops and businesses, but we need several more house to house collectors, so if you are able to help by doing a round, please either contact our Poppy organiser, Maggie Pelly on 01963-251785,or the Chairman
