WI sing Jerusalem with Handbell ringers

WI logoChristine Porter writes, firstly, I'm pleased to report that our two teams did well at the County Quiz evening held in Henstridge in July, one of them coming second and only losing out by one point.

August has been a busy month for us socially.   It started with our visit to Cothelstone Manor at the beginning of the month. This is a privately owned manor house in a lovely rural setting a few miles north of Taunton.

We were welcomed by the present owner who gave us a talk about the history of the house and we were given access to most of the downstairs rooms. We then visited the church situated in the grounds and where regular services still take place every Sunday.   When we strolled back into the house we were given tea consisting of various sandwiches and sponge cakes and, as the weather was fine, we could enjoy this outside. It was a very successful outing and Hazel and Janet did well to organise it.

Our usual meeting was held in Church House as we decided to celebrate the Centenary of Somerseter WI by inviting members from other institutes.   We were entertained by Wincantata, the handbell ringers who played several tunes ending with Jerusalem to which we all sang along.   This was followed by a meal consisting of cold meat and quiches provided by Wayne, our local butcher, and several delicious salads provided by members, and some equally delicious desserts.  Everyone agreed it had been a really enjoyable evening.

Yesterday six of us went to Wincanton's annual summer lunch held at Cucklington. As it was their 100th anniversary too they gave a glass of bubbly to everyone and had a special birthday cake made.

Looking forward to September, our normal meeting is on 13th at 7.30pm in our WI Room and our speaker will be talking about 'Behind Locked Doors'.   There are also various Sports events taking place, the first one being the annual croquet competition which Henstridge organise at the golf club on 11th. Next we will be having a Skittles Evening at the Country Club, organised by Kate and Hazel, on the 17th, followed by people wishing to play games of Pitch and Putt golf in Yeovil on either the 18th or 20th.   These activities will give us a chance to lose some of the calores we have put on by eating so much delicious food this month!

Finally, can I please urge everyone to take part in our MacMillan Coffee Morning on 21st September in our WI Room,   We would be most grateful for all cakes.   If you aren't able to provide one, then please come along and buy one, have a coffee, buy a raffle ticket and make a donation to this very worthy cause. Maureen has worked hard and organised this event for many years and I know I can rely on your generous donations.
