WI Update for July 2018

WIEarly in July seven of us went to the 'Strawberry Evening' at Horsington.  This is something they host annually to boost their funds and it gives us a chance to socialise with the other WI’s in our Group. An ex-cruise ship singer regaled us with stories of her career.  This was followed by a delicious buffet, finishing with fresh strawberries and cream.   Our next social event with the Stavordale Group is when Wincanton host their annual lunch at Cucklington on the 15th August.  However, this year they will be celebrating their 100 birthday - we have a few years to go yet.

Our booked speaker for July was unable to attend so we hastily booked a fellow WI Member from Somerton who is a fund raiser for the Marie Curie charity.   She showed slides explaining how the charity was started and the work they undertake nowadays.  Their sole aim is to care for 'end of life' patients in their own homes where possible and we were all moved by her talk.   After our coffee break, members were advised of all forthcoming events for August, such as our trip to Cothelstone Manor, our own social evening in August and the Wincanton Lunch.   There is also 'Sports Week;' to look forward to in September and the AGM in Yeovil in October.   This was followed by a history quiz compiled by Hazel and won by Pam Alexander.

Our August meeting takes place on 9th August in Church House (not our WI Room) when we will be having our own celebration to mark the centenary of the Somerset Federation.  This is for members only and we have invited the other local WI’s.   We will be having a concert given by Handbell Ringers - Wincanton, followed by a cold supper.   If this lovely weather continues we will be able to make use of the lovely garden at Church House.

In the meantime, do call in for a coffee/tea/fruit tea in our WI Room any Friday morning after 10.30am and don't forget we will be having our annual Macmillan Coffee Morning at the end of September.
