Friends of Milborne Port Library (FOMPL) July Update

First, thanks to all of you who took the trouble to respond to the County Council’s proposals for the future of our Library, by completing the Consultation Questionnaire. It is an anxious time as we await the County’s decisions. But – Summer is approaching with several positive and cheerful events in prospect.

First will be celebrations of the 30th Anniversary of the opening of the Library in Cross Cottage. Anniversary Day will be on Friday 13th July, when between 9.30 am and 4.30 pm, you are invited to drop in and enjoy a drink of Fizz (alcoholic and non-alcoholic!) and nibbles. Displays will show the History of the Library, and of the Friends’ own seven-year history. At a time when we do not know whether that History will continue or not, we invite you all to come, whether you are a Member of the Library or not, to show how much you value having a Library in the Village.

Designed for 4 to 11-year olds, and running right through the holidays until 8th September, this is always popular with our young people. 60 children took part last year,70 the year before, so let’s see if we can beat that.   This year’s theme is ‘Beanotown’, (shades of Dennis the Menace, Gnasher and friends!) where rumour has it there’s a treasure chest full of epic pranks to be discovered. Taking part in the Challenge is simple. When school holidays start, youngsters can sign up for free at the Library.

Adults with fond memories of The Beano can only watch on enviously. Or perhaps Volunteer to be on hand to help with the Challenge, helping children sign in, checking in the read books, reading to visiting children or doing an activity with them. Have a chat with the Library Staff if this interests you.

As part of the Summer Reading Challenge programme, local Children’s Author, Cherry Cobb, will be visiting the Library on the morning of 17th August. We’ll give full details of this in next months’ report but keep an eye out too for Posters about all these events.
