We had a really interesting speaker at our June meeting when Lesley Sutcliffe spoke about the 'Life and Times of Jonathan Toogood', who was a Victorian surgeon and one of the founders of Bridgwater Hospital. It was fascinating to hear of the pioneering work carried out by the
medical profession at that time and Dr. Toogood, whose family originated near Sherborne, embraced the new methods.

After our coffee break, I welcomed Ailsa, who has now become a member of our WI, and thanked members for providing the delicious cakes which we sold on our stall at the SOMP Fete at the beginning of the month.  Val Mead was complimented on the excellent job of keeping our planters
looking attractive outside the Town Hall and near the Weighbridge.   They are representing the Suffragette colours of violet, green and white this year to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of both the Suffrage Movement and Somerset Federation W.I.

There are several special events to look forward to this summer, starting with a 'Strawberry Evening' on the 5th July at Horsington which they hold every year, followed by the County Quiz taking place in Henstridge as usual on the 25th.   We are having our own celebration at our August meeting which will take place in Church House as we will be inviting members from the Stavordale Group as well as others.   This will be for WI Members only and we will be serving a buffet supper
after we have been entertained by the Wincanton Bell Ringers.

Our Summer Outing this year is on Thursday 2nd August when we will be going to Cothelstone Manor, near Taunton.   The coach will be leaving at 12.15.  We will be having a guided tour of the house, gardens and church before being served tea.   The price is £26.50 inclusive, and we are happy for non-members to come with us.   If you are interested, please telephone Hazel on 01963 251428 or call in to our WI Room during Friday mornings when we are open for coffee to add your name to the list.

Our next meeting is on 12th July at 7.30pm when the speaker will be giving a talk entitled 'Pets are a Pleasure'.   I look forward to seeing everyone there.   In the meantime, do remember we are serving
good coffee and a selection of teas on Friday mornings from 10.30am in our room at the old Town Hall.
