WI Celebrate 100 years of Somerset Federation

WI logoAt the end of April six of us went to Wells and joined several other institutes to celebrate 100 years of the Somerset Federation by marching from the Cathedral, down the high street, to St. Cuthbert's Church.  We marched behind our new banner, created and made by Iris Coe and members of the Craft Group, and sang Jerusalem when we arrived at the church, and speeches were given by the Mayor and our Chairman - the latter becoming rather emotional as this was her last year in the chair. It felt good to be part of a national movement and the threatened rain kept away.

Just before that we enjoyed out day's visit to the Poppy Factory at Richmond where all the poppies that you wear on your lapels in November are made, along with all wreaths placed on war memorials around the country.   It was a fascinating visit. We were shown a film about the work carried out by the British Legion, especially in finding jobs for ex-servicemen who have been injured, both physically and mentally, whilst in serving our country.   When we went into the factory we all made a poppy for ourselves which we will wear with pride later this year.

In May it was our AGM when reports of this past year were read out. The committee and officers were re-elected - the only change being Ann Neal will replace Reidun as Secretary.   We then voted for this year's Resolution which is that mental health should be regarded as important as physical health and this will be forwarded to our representative at the forthcoming national AGM next month.   After the official business, we played a few rounds of a Beetle Drive which proved to be quite hilarious.   It was good to welcome two visitors, Ailsa and Beth, who will hopefully become members.

If you happen to read this before the SOMP Fete at the beginning of June, do please come along to our stall where we will be selling home made cakes etc.   You can also pick up a programme which gives details of our forthcoming events for the rest of this year.

Our next monthly meeting will be on 14th June when we will be having a talk on the 'Life and Times of Jonathan Toogood' who was the founder of Bridgewater Hospital and I look forward to seeing members and visitors then.
