Friends of Mlborne Port Libraries - March 2018

Black FOMPL logo002In last month’s report Christine mentioned that Milborne Port Library was one of the 15 libraries at risk from the financial cuts Somerset County Council are having to make. Well this is now a definite fact. According to the County Council website the proposals for Milborne Port are as follows

To provide library services through either:

  • a partnership with the local community to maintain a library building in Milborne Port. As yet the proposals do not provide details of exactly how the County Council would contribute to the costs of maintaining the library building – this includes the annual rent of the premises, heating, staff salaries and general maintenance.
  • an additional mobile library stop. This would mean the closure of the current library building, with library services being provided in other ways. They do not specify the frequency of mobile library stops.

The Somerset County Council website states the following

Somerset County Council is fully committed to continuing to deliver a thriving, modern library service across Somerset …’

The County Council are currently conducting a consultation regarding libraries across the county, their use and needs. You can access the consultation document via the following link You then need to click on the library proposal map on the right of the screen and then click on Yeovil.

There will be a drop-in session on TUESDAY 6 MARCH from 2.30 – 5.30. This will take place in the Camelot Room at the Village Hall. As I understand it, groups will be welcomed on the hour, eg 2.30, 3.30 etc but anyone can drop in at any time. On the same evening there is a full Parish Council meeting and representatives of the South West Libraries are expected to attend. It would be great to see some members of the Friends of Milborne Port Library, so if you really care, try to be there! The meeting starts at 7 pm in the Town Hall.

On a lighter note, the children’s Storytime sessions have resumed and are going well. No need to book, just come along on a Friday at 10.30, and join in the fun for half an hour!

Jigsaw puzzles continue to be very popular and we welcome any contributions to add to our stock.

All we need now is some sunshine.
