WI having a very busy time

WI logoChristine Porter writes; At our meeting in February, David Andrews, our local resident, entertained us by singing 'Romantic Songs through the Ages' which we joined in. In between the songs David showed us various posters depicting changes through the years.   Most of the songs were familiar to us, having been sung by our parents, aunts & uncles etc. at Christmas and other occasions so they brought back happy memories.

Continuing with the 'romantic' theme, our competition was a romantic piece of verse.   Five members read out poems ranging from Pam Ayres to Rabbie Burns, so they ranged from the highly amusing to the sentimental.   We were very pleased to welcome Jo to our membership.   The evening concluded with a quiz read by Ann.

Some of our members attended a special Burns Supper organised by Henstridge WI in January. We had the traditional meal of haggis with 'neaps and tatties', followed by a choice of delicious puddings. They performed a five-minute abridged play of Macbeth and we all attempted some Scottish dancing. I'm delighted to say that our Emma won the prize for the best dressed person and looked lovely in her special kilt.   The following week six of us went to South Cadbury where we enjoyed a special tea and chatted to other WIs.

We have been invited 'across the border' into Dorset as Thornford have invited four of us to their annual birthday celebration in March.   Then we have the Road Show later in March when we will be going to Compton Dundon to find out what the Federation is organising to celebrate their centenary this year, as well as hearing some interesting speakers.

I believe all seats for our theatre trip in March have been allocated. However, there are some spaces available for our next outing which is on Monday, April 23rd when we will be visiting the British Legion Poppy Factory and be taken on a tour to see how the poppies are made etc.   The cost is £25, which includes a donation, and we will be leaving Milborne Port shortly after 8.30am, getting to Richmond in time for people to have wander round and have lunch, before going to the factory in the afternoon.   If you are interested in joining us on this trip please contact either Hazel on 251428, Janet on 250844 or pop into the WI Room any Friday morning when we will be open for serving coffee etc.

Our next meeting is on March 8th when we will be enjoying our annual dinner in Church House - this is for members only and should be ordered and paid for by the end of February.

In the meantime, please don't forget our room is open on Friday mornings from 10.30 for serving hot drinks and cake to villagers and visitors.
