WI getting ready to celebrate 100 years in Somerset

WI logoChristine Porter writes; Our December meeting was a thoroughly enjoyable occasion attended by 35 members. After a short speech informing everyone of some exciting forthcoming events in January, Martyn Else arrived with our pre- ordered boxes of fish & chips. This was followed by home-made trifle and washed down with glasses of wine.

After we finished eating, our speaker arrived. This was David Andrews from Oborne who had helped us out at short notice, having been let down by our previously arranged speaker. However, he certainly wasn't second-best as he played a selection of songs from the sixties which most of us knew very well so were able to sing along with him. This was interspersed by various poems and anecdotes, making for a very noisy and happy evening. Just before the evening ended, Kate read a very amusing and slightly risqué poem about a librarian, which had us roaring with laughter before we went out into the cold night.

Somerset Federation will be 100 years old next year and they are organising various events to mark the occasion. Henstridge have started the ball rolling by hosting a special Scottish-themed evening to celebrate Burns Night at the end of January and have invited 6 of our members to attend. Then on the afternoon of 31st January, South Cadbury & Sutton Montis have invited us to their traditional 'Winter Warmer'. This is always a pleasant afternoon with delicious sandwiches and cakes to enjoy.

We were pleased to open our room on the night of the Lights Switch On, serving hot drinks and mince pies. We think the SOMP work very hard to make this evening successful. Our next outing is a theatre trip on 15th March when we will be seeing the play 'Quartet' at Salisbury Playhouse Theatre. The price for tickets and coach fare will be £27 and this is open to non-members if space available.

Our programme for 2018 is a very interesting and varied one. Our next meeting is on 11th January at 7.30pm and I look forward to seeing everyone then and welcoming any new and prospective members.

May I take this opportunity of wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Milborne Port WI.
