MILBORNE PORT HISTORY & HERITAGE GROUP

Heritage LogoOur June meeting will be held on Monday 17th June 2019 at 7.30pm in Church House, Bathwell Lane, Milborne.  The title of the talk will be 'The Gerald Daniels Legacy’ and will be given by Richard Duckworth, as always Richard’s talks and presentations are fascinating as his local knowledge is second to none. The presentation will be about the steam railway special trains from Salisbury to Exeter. Come along and find out who was Gerald Daniels and see a clip of Milborne Port station that Richard has never shown before.

This will be a fund-raising evening for the group and any money raised will be used to buy new display boards for the museum and so there will be an entry charge of £3 for members and £7 for non-members to the meeting and will include an optional glass of wine or a soft drink.

The Museum (The Chapel, The Cemetery, Wheathill Lane) will be open every Sunday from 26th May until 25th August 2019. Opening time 2.30pm to 4.00pm. Until the 7th  July, there will be an additional display entitled ‘Newtown, 100 years Since the Sale’.

Our programme of short guided walks will commence on Monday 24th June where we will walk the Old Minster enclosure. On Monday 1st July the walk will be Gainsborough and Newtown. All walks will start from the Ball Court at 7.00pm.

At our last meeting Lesley Wray, Lyn Harrison, Nathalie Hetherington, Janet Matthews & Mary Clothier gave an engaging presentation, in period costume, on the local suffrage movement. Well done Ladies!  How many people know that the first vote in a parliamentary election cast by a woman took place in Yeovil, four years before the rest of the country.
