Newsletter - 25th November 2017

With the lights switch on at the weighbridge taking place on November 24th, organised by The Spirit of Milborne Port, the Christmas season is almost upon us and it will soon be winter as we move into December.

This year, December sees a number of entertainments in the village, starting with an Alan Bennett monologue “Bed among the lentils” which takes place at the Parish Church on Friday 1st December, accompanied by Tumlyn Brass.

A week later, the village hall hosts the return of the New Scorpion Band for a Christmas themed gig on 8th December, followed a day later by “The Audience”, a stage play starring Hellen Mirren which has been filmed and will be shown as a stage on screen event. Both these Village Hall events are in part a response to the Parish Plan survey earlier in the year where respondents asked for more live entertainment at the village hall.

The Friends of Milborne Port Library were also part of the lights switch on and also report on recent meetings with county library service and the upcoming visit of a local author, Caroline Newark.

The WI report on their activities including success at a group quiz and the preparations for their fish and chip supper on the 14th December and their shopping trip to Exeter. The Gardening club look forward to welcoming new members at their forthcoming meeting.

To supplement the formal minutes of the Parish Council, have a look at our regular “News from the Council Chamber” which highlights some of the months main issues. This month, two planning applications loomed large as did the co-option of three new councillors.

Longer term planning is also in the news as SSDC are reviewing their local plan and there will be a series of walk in sessions to view and comment on these as it evolves.

Your Parish Council has recently completed the installation of new swings at the Gainsborough playground including one especially designed for children with a disability.

As we move towards Christmas week, there will be a series of special services to mark the nativity including a united carol service on Sunday 17th December. Some of these extra services are shown on the diary.

We have no doubt that there is even more going on in our village than we have recorded here. If you know of anything that is not mentioned either here or in the diary, please get in touch. In the meantime, may we wish our readers a very happy and peaceful Christmas and new year.
