A brief look at news and events at the end of July.

We have been disappointed to report some vandalism on the newly erected community swimming pool roof at the Primary School. The cost of necessary measures needed to prevent a recurrence will delay the finishing touches planned for the pool.

On a much more positive note, we see that the bus shelter by Crackmore has been given a new lease of life with willing help from village residents as well as children from both the Gryphon school and our own Primary School. A picture gallery of the work that has been done is also available.

The WI also report on this work as the original construction was supported by the WI. They also report on the forthcoming activities including an August barbecue for their members.

August sees a number of heritage walks by the history and heritage groups as well as themed opening days of the cemetery chapel museum on each Sunday. You can read more about what is planned on the heritage pages of the web site or the diary pages.

Along with a book review this month is a reminder of the book reading group which meets in the library each month on a Tuesday evening. Also on library subjects, FOMPL report on a Somerset libraries meeting, the summer reading challenge and a user satisfaction survey.

Once again, the bellringers of Milborne Port will be holding a half muffled ring in tribute to the life of Joseph Hewlett, a soldier lost to the Great War. We were struck, whilst watching the commemoration of the battle of Passchendaele that the picture accompanying the article of the Tyne Cot cemetery does not begin to show the awful scale of that battle.

Moving on from that sobering thought, we wish all our readers an enjoyable remains of the summer, and if there is any news or other items you wish reported, please contact the administrator.
