Newsletter - 26th December 2017

We hope that our subscribers are having a good festive season, though writing this on boxing day, the weather is not very festive and people may already be thinking of clearing up after the holidays are finished. Some help is at hand as with previous years, SSDC and your Parish Council have teamed up to provide a tree recycling service. See this notice for details.

The Parish Council will be holding its first meeting of 2018 on 2nd January and notes from the December meeting last year, either as the council’s information “News from the Council Chamber” or the formal minutes can be found on their pages.

We understand that the Spirit of Milborne Port are looking for further volunteers to help make their events such as the Christmas lights switch on and the fete go with a swing.

Our regular readers will have the “Remembering” series of articles, each on commemorating a fallen soldier from the first World War. The articles on the website were seen by someone in Canada, a relative of Arthur Harold Parsons. They have sent further information on Pte. Parsons which is recorded this month.

The Friends of Milborne Port library report that they will be starting a new Story and Rhyme Time during the school term, and they also note an upcoming visit by a local author. For this and other news, please look at their full article here.

The WI report that they are getting ready to celebrate 100 years of activity in Somerset.

Moviola returns to the Village Hall in January with a screening on 26th January, of “Victoria and Abdul”, starring Judi Dench as Queen Victoria.

Following the survey earlier in the year as part of the Parish Plan update where over half the respondents said they would like to see the village hall used for film, theatre and concerts, the Village Hall have been very active in recent months in promoting a range of entertainment in addition to the club based use of the hall throughout the week. Early in December the New Scorpion band returned to the hall and the following day, a screening of ”The Audience”, a stage play starring Hellen Mirren was shown. Two more live concerts are planned for 2018 so far, starting on March 2nd with the Neil Maya Quartet.

This has been a brief look at events in January. There will be much more going on, so please do look at the news pages as the month evolves and also keep looking at the diary pages. As ever, if you know of other things which should be reported here, please contact the website.
